Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)

Ready to take your training to the next level, but leaking is holding you back?
You’re not alone. Around 37.5% of women experience stress urinary incontinence (SUI) at some point in their lives, even those who haven’t had a baby!

So, what is stress urinary incontinence (SUI)?
SUI is the unintentional leakage of urine during activities that increase pressure in your abdomen, such as running, jumping, lifting, or even coughing. While pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause are common risk factors, SUI can also affect women who haven’t experienced any of these.

It’s not just about doing more Kegels!
Kegels can be a helpful tool, but they’re only one part of the picture. Successful treatment of SUI also involves muscle coordination, leg and ankle strength, and even the way you breath. The good news? With targeted, personalised exercises, you can build strength and coordination through your pelvic and supporting muscles to support the activities you love.

What’s the difference between a Pelvic Physiotherapist and a Women’s Health Exercise Physiologist?

A Women’s Health Exercise Physiologist focuses on strengthening and coordinating the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles to support your movement, daily activities, and overall quality of life. While highly knowledgeable in pelvic anatomy and function, we do not perform internal or hands-on assessments, nor do we diagnose specific conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse.

A Pelvic Physiotherapist, on the other hand, does conduct hands-on assessments and may use tools such as ultrasound to evaluate and treat your pelvic floor. They can diagnose conditions like prolapse and prescribe medical aids such as pessaries or dilators.

If you're experiencing significant pelvic floor symptoms, we recommend starting with a pelvic physiotherapist to assess and ensure proper pelvic floor activation and relaxation. Once that foundation is set, an Exercise Physiologist can help you progress—improving your strength, coordination, and function so you can get back to the things you love.

Whether your goal is returning to a run class, jumping into a pump session, or finally bouncing on the trampoline with your kids, we’re here to help you get there—without fear of leaking.
